WMCCL RD1 - Shrewsbury
Round 1 of the cyclocross appears to have come round really quickly, just as the MTB dust settles it appears we a straight back at it! As the weather forecast looked promising myself and family headed up to Shrewsbury on Saturday with the caravan and spent the night at the venue, this allowed us to have a relaxing afternoon/evening and on Sunday morning we never had a mad rush we just chilled and enjoyed the sun. On Saturday afternoon I headed to the track and managed to get a couple of laps of practice in, the track was extremely good fun, fast but technical with a few off camber sections to keep you on your toes, Mid Shropshire Wheelers did an excellent job and everything looked awesome.
After a very quiet night I managed to get a great night’s sleep, race day was upon us, as the car park started to fill up I headed out for a practice spin around the track, the morning dew had left the grass slippery so a quick tire pressure change helped giving me maximum grip as the race start neared. With this being the first round we were gridded based on our surname, this resulted me starting on the third row so fairly happy with that. With the tension of the start building I knew I needed a good start and to make passes quickly so I got ready and waited for the starter to blow the whistle, as the whistle sounded I shot out the start and moved very quickly to the front, entering the first turn in second place, I pushed hard round the first turn and managed to take the lead, from this point on I got my head down and focused on my race, pushing myself. As the laps passed I extended my lead consistently and as I crossed the finish line I was about 50 seconds ahead of second place so really happy with my performance and I had plenty left to give.
I really enjoyed the weekend and Im super looking forward to next weekend, I’m heading to the cycle show on Saturday and then racing Round 2 on Sunday @ Redditch.
Thank you to my sponsors, Full Throttle Racing and Mitas Tyres.
